At the end of the Rue Guénégaud, coming
from the quays, you find the Arcade of the
Pont Neuf, a sort of narrow, dark corridor
running from the rue Mazarine to the Rue
ded Seine. This arcade, at the most, is thirty
paces long by two in breadth. It is paved
with worn, loose, yellowish tiles which are
never free from acrid damp. The square
panes of glass forming the roof, are black
with filth.

河岸からやってくるとゲネゴー街の外れにポン・ヌフ
街のアーケードが見える．狭い暗い通路になっており、
マザリーヌ街からド・セーヌ街まで続いている．この
アーケードはせいぜいのところ長さが30歩、幅が２歩
といったところである．それはすり切れてがたがたで
陽に黄色く変色したタイルの敷石道で、どんなときも
酷いにおいのする湿気から解放されることはない．
アーケードの天井は四角い天井窓の枠にガラスが張られ
ているが煤けて黒ずんでいる．
